Meet RFK Education Award Winner Noris Sophia Bernard-Hierro

What did winning the 2024 RFK Award mean to you?

It was such an honor, because it was a huge surprise. I was just in the middle of my English class, and one of my teachers came in, and she's like, have you checked your email? You do your work and you do your normal day things, not expecting anything to happen. To be recognized, it's kind of cool, because you're just like, oh, people recognize what I'm doing. So it's nice, feeling like people notice what you're doing.

What, in your opinion, makes someone a good leader?

A good leader isn't the most intelligent person in the room, they're not the loudest person in the room. They're the person who listens to other people. I feel like all good leaders are people who recognize what is happening around them and realize the people around them. The biggest thing for leaders [is] to have good listening skills and be attentive to their surroundings and people.

What was your favorite part about being a student at your high school?

My favorite part about being a student in Clairton is how small it is. It's how you constantly have chances to interact with people from all different grade levels, from different areas of expertise. You see the community, and you actually get to be a part of it.

What are some of your hopes for this upcoming academic year?

I hope I am able to enjoy my college experience, while being able to advance with my career, because my school is very academic-focused.  I want to emphasize doing things, getting opportunities to meet new people, forming connections while studying, and focusing on getting good grades.

What are some passions or some potential careers that you might want to pursue after college?

I'm planning on majoring in engineering. I was accepted to civil and I'm considering actually switching to nuclear.
